Meeting with Dr. Perumalswami

I started the day by meeting with Dr. Perumalswami and her HCV patients. It was a very educational experience. I observed Liver Scans (by using brand new technology that sends sound waves to the liver to see its toughness/elasticity, called FibroScan). I also observed that all doctor/patient rooms are equip with computers that allows doctors to enter information and test results from each visit, in addition to sending prescriptions electronically, and disclosing patient info to the patient through a feature called "my charts." I believe that the best way to educate patients about their condition to properly log their information is by choosing patients who have a "my chart" account, or who have PCPs who have online records. If not, the patient would only be able to enter as much information as possible and request the rest from his doctor. For example, if a question is left blank after the questionnaire, there can be a button on the app that says "send to doctor" and a PCP will have to enter all of the other required fields because the last thing we need is a patient guessing if he/she has cirrhosis.
Dr. Perumalswami did a wonderful job of explaining everything to me...I feel like I got months worth of med school in 3 hours! I also got to meet some patients and observe as she described the common forms of transmission, risk factors, complications that accompany HCV (potassium levels, side effects [esp: fatigue], and different medications that are prescribed along with the common INT/Tel/Boc. She also described the medication treatment more in depth and described how the virus attacks and how the disease progresses.
Today was very edcuational and it gave me an inside look into the lives of the patients I'm treating (many of which came from Africa, where blood screenings are uncommon and rituals take place that involve the transfer of blood, in order to join a brotherhood/become a man). It was all very intriguing.
I had an educational experience and Dr. Perumalswami was nothing but professional and kind :)
