Today I looked up patient info on pubmed.gov and tried to understand where it is in the treatment that patients get stuck and quit. A reoccurring problem that I saw was that HCV patients had a lack of support. Since this app replaces in-office meetings and gears toward communication through an online interface, it will be a challenge to build personal connections between PCP and patients, while providing support via the app. For that reason, I worked on the "support" icon of the app. It will provide the patient with all support imaginable: physician teleconferences, in-office meetings, meetings with psycologists, psychiatirists, medical practicioners specialized in Hep C treatment in their area, how to communicate with loved ones about HCV, finding support groups, and even discussing your condition with other patients in your community, or around the world via online profiles, chat groups, and meetings through personal information disclosure.
This is probably one of the most crucial aspect of the application, that is why I am tackling it first. However, it is not the main source of the treatment. It does not check symptoms, suggest medications, etc, but it does offer the support that patients need and it tries to complete their treatment. By prompting patients to get involved with others with HCV, the goal of this icon is to alleviate the constrained and private nature of the disease and to create a community in which many are getting cured and still others become aware of the disease.
In terms of speaking with family and friends about the disease, I found 2 pdfs that I uploaded to Dropbox. In addition, I found one of the best websites ever!! This is probably the best website that I've come across yet: http://www.hepatitis-central.com
The PPT that I was working on today is attached to this blog. It is a rough draft and just a starting point, but I was able to brainstorm and let my imagination run wild. I hope to add more ideas, as support is the biggest factor in curing a patient.
