My name is Ed Lee, and this will be my official blog where I will discuss my contributions and observations in relation to my participation in Mt. Sinai's Informatics and App Lab program.  Mount Sinai Medical Center’s Division of Gastroenterology is one of very few medical centers in the country hosting its own internal App Lab for Health
IT  development and I'm lucky enough to be working with this team on the cutting edge!  Exactly how I like it!

Headed by Dr. Ashish Atreja, Chief Technology Engagement and Innovation Officer for the  Department of Medicine, this department is working to develop new platforms and apps that will better connect  patients to providers improving health outcomes and create new research opportunities

Although we are in the 21st century, a lot of the way business is conducted in this country is outdated.

Patients should have the ability to have their information documented in a much better way.  This documentation should move easier between health care providers, and in this digital age there is absolutely no good reason for medical records not to travel with ease and dramatically reduced cost.  (In one article I read it was stated that the average cost of processing ONLY the paperwork for a patient cost in excess of $50.  This is outrageous!)  Also a very exciting part of this project is that data can now start to be processed and interact with patients in real time providing for immediate notification of both patients and health care providers with data that can prevent an impending crisis through earlier detection of disease or even identification of chronic conditions from continuous and reliable data streams.

The internet rivals the wheel as in terms of it's ubiquity of impact acrost human communication, and has reshaped the fields and businesses of music, books, and other media.  Any information based business including education has already seen incredible amounts of change, and the medical field is no different.  I am truly excited to be on the cutting edge and to work with those who are defining the discourse of what is sure to be the future of medicine!
